Biking beyond Type 1

[Post originally published on Nevada Appeal, available HERE.]

Diabetes may seem like a debilitating diagnosis, but 20 cyclists are working to prove this isn’t the case by riding over 4,200 miles across the United States.

Here’s a video captured by Neil Greathouse of the brushfire that started right after lightning struck a field across from the house the team was staying in!

Minneapolis Biker Takes on Diabetes in Epic Ride

[Post originally published by Minnesota Monthly, available HERE.]

Waking up at 5:30 a.m., Minneapolis resident Abbey Brau checks her blood sugar levels, gathers her gear from whatever school gym or firehouse she just slept in, and hops on her bike in pursuit of the West Coast. She’s one of the team leaders of Bike Beyond, a biking excursion of 22 amateur bikers that pedals from New York City to San Francisco. It’s hosted by philanthropic organization Beyond Type 1 to foster openness about type 1 diabetes and advocate for a cure. Traveling 4,248 miles in just 10 weeks, Brau expected that her blood sugar levels would drop. What she did not anticipate, however, was that blood sugar can spike if you rest for too long after eating and then expend a lot of energy. The dizziness and blurred vision can make it difficult for her and her team members to keep going. At times like this, Brau reminds herself—and her team—why they set out on this expedition: to dash the stereotype that says people living with the chronic disease can’t go hard.

Bike Beyond Picnic!

Thanks to Neil Greathouse for capturing this fun video of the team picnic!

Hi, my name is Abbey. Remember me? I TOLD EVERYBODY I was going to blog about my adventure biking across the country this summer…. and then… I didn’t.

BUT I’M HERE NOW. Or at least for right now.

Update from Melissa!

What do you get when you put an endurance cyclist, an ultra-runner and a marathon-swimmer in the same ride group for a day of 90 flat, Ohio miles?
A 20mph pace line and a few moments to get in your zone and find that endurance athlete head space.

When our ride mileage was unexpectedly doubled for today and we left an hour late, 90 miles sounded like the LONGEST day. Fortunately, I rode with these two badass woman and we KILLED IT — AND finished before the rest of the team (love you guys, but ya know…).

Feeling strong as hell after a challenging but awesome ride.

05/29 Pre-Ride Questionnaire

Tell us about the first time you rode a bike.
Terrified to take off the training wheels, and crying as my younger sister flew by.

Tell us about a crazy moment or embarrassing experience with Type 1.
I seem to have an issue with going low in churches. I’ve eaten m&m’s in church, rummaged through strange church kitchens for cookies or juice, and met at least one OJ guard… she poured me exactly 1/2 a cup of OJ, put the saran-wrap back on the pitcher (full of juice), said it was for after-church socializing and then left me alone to drink the juice…

What would your spirit animal be?
Labrador Retriever

What’s your go-to low snack?
At work – any nearby gummy candy #workperks
At the gym – Clif Shot Blocks
At home – juice box

Tell us something on your bucket list.
To complete the Triple Crown of open water swimming: the English Channel, the Catalina Channel and the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim. 1 down, 2 to go!

If your friends could pick three adjectives to describe you, what would they be?
Active, Social, Late

What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why?
Actually? The Bachelor. I know… but I’m trying to win a Bachelor Fantasy League!

Tell us something about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.
I recently won a contest for dressing like Barb from Stranger Things.

What’s a super power you wish you had?
Ability to slow time.

Tell us something you’re good at!
Brunch. Making it, attending it, eating it, bolusing for it. 😉

If you had a theme song for yourself, what would it be?
“Shake it off” by Taylor Swift

If you had a nick name/alter ego for yourself during the ride, what would it be?
Tough to say… my sister is answering for me: Abtron
