Update from Ryan!

Giving these mountains a big hug goodbye 🤗 because Colorado has been incredible to us.

Maybe the thin air up here is getting to me, but I’m already missing this beautiful state 🏔🚲🙌

Utah, here we come!

Loveland Pass, CO

Update from Ryan!

After riding up our first Colorado mountain pass, the first thing we decided to do was hike to the *actual* top of the mountain with our bikes. The opportunity was too good to “pass” up ✌️😅  Jesse and Elliot, you guys are insane!

Boulder, CO

Update from Ryan!

How will I fare against the notorious Rocky Mountains? That remains to be seen, but at least we know I can hold my bike over my head with one hand 👍

Update from Ryan!

Solid evening at Red Rocks with Siddarth, Walt, and Amos Lee + Colorado Symphony Orchestra! *Almost* as much fun as we’re going to have riding through the Rockies

St. Louis, MO

Update from Ryan!

Watch out Lewis and Clark, I’m plotting my own westward expansion 🌎🚵 this team of unstoppable type 1 diabetics is about to cross the Mississippi River into a whole new phase of our journey. Don’t know what lies ahead, but I sure know what lies within 💪#bikebeyond#beyondtype1 #diabetesstrong #headingwest#seeyouinsanfran — at Gateway Arch.

updates from Helen’s day in the van!

Lunch van duties today in the van with lovely Perri. It’s definitely not a rest day as your have to stick with the team providing water, food, low snacks and any other help needed. It was great to watch the team be so great, pushing so hard in crazy hot weathers, on a long ride with a lot of hills!

Weirdly I had the most hypos in one day today. Maybe after yesterday’s big ride? I like to look for patterns/trends in my sugar levels but mainly I like to accept it does whatever and I just aim to deal with it at it comes!

05/29 Pre-Ride Questionnaire

Tell us about the first time you rode a bike.
I thought I was really cool and tried using my dad’s clipless pedals. I was so excited when both of my cleats finally clicked in that I forgot to move and fell sideways. I still have scars on the inside of my right ankle.

Tell us about a crazy moment or embarrassing experience with Type 1.
The first few times I told my friends in China that I have “diabetes”, they gave me a very puzzled look and changed the topic. I realized after a while that I had mixed up the tones and was actually saying “Bird Soup Disease”. Very rare condition, much tastier than diabetes.

What would your spirit animal be?
Is Pikachu an animal?

What’s your go-to low snack?
Skittles. The fun-sized packets fit perfectly in my satchel, and they are just the right amount of carbs to bring me back up when I’m low.

Tell us something on your bucket list.
Aside from biking across the United States? Learning to do a standing backflip.

If your friends could pick three adjectives to describe you, what would they be?
Hardworking. Alpha male. Jackhammer. Merciless. Insatiable.

What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why?
The Office (see previous answer).

Tell us something about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.
I tell everyone here in Georgia that I despise country music, but it’s actually not that bad.

What’s a super power you wish you had?
I’d like the ability to open bathroom stalls without touching the handle.

Tell us something you’re good at!
Forgetting to lift the toilet seat. Sorry, Mom!

If you had a theme song for yourself, what would it be?
“Trees” by Twenty One Pilots

If you had a nick name/alter ego for yourself during the ride, what would it be?
Type I Rya-betes
